# Christie NHS Trust engineers upskill with AM training

Based in Manchester, England, the Christie NHS Trust is the largest single site cancer center in Europe and is among the most advanced cancer treatment centers in the world, treating over 60,000 patients per year. As a leading medical facility, Christie NHS Trust continually embraces technological innovations in the cancer treatment field, including technologies like additive manufacturing, which can improve patient care and operational efficiency. Despite the interest in adopting additive manufacturing technologies, however, Christie NHS Trust found a lack of skills was limiting the technology's potential.

To address this, the center partnered with 3D 360, a training company based just outside of Manchester, to implement its 3D Printing & Industry 4.0 Skills Bootcamp. Engineers working at the Christie NHS Trust, who may not have formal training in 3D printing technologies, were given this hands-on training program in order to learn the skills necessary to use 3D printing in a medical setting, troubleshoot issues and fully understand the potential of the technology—all with the aim of improving patient care.

This included working with a manual 3D printer to really understand each step in the AM process and any troubleshooting requirements and learning accessible, yet technical industry knowledge relevant to the clinical setting of the hospital. 3D 360 also emphasized that its training course welcomes an open dialogue among participants.

Ultimately, the training course has given a cohort of engineers at the Christie NHS Trust the knowledge and skills needed to identify whether problems that arise are related to operator or mechanical issues and how to 3D print medical devices with greater efficiency. For some engineers, whose backgrounds were in non-AM related fields like electronics, the training also offered a professional advantage.
"The friendly and insightful approach of the training team allowed me not only to learn but also to become more independent in my role," commented Logan Halsall, Engineer Apprentice in the Medical Physics and Engineering Department at the Christie NHS Trust. "Gaining hands-on experience with the manual printer was invaluable for understanding the intricacies of the system."

The NHS is increasingly interested in leveraging 3D printing technologies to improve treatments, surgical procedures and overall patient care. Among the health system's uses of AM are surgical models and guides, implants and prosthetics, all of which can be tailored to the patient in question, while reducing wait times and optimization resource utilization. Recently, for instance, the Bristol 3D Medical Centre made a [custom 3D printed facial prosthesis](https://www.voxelmatters.com/british-cyclist-3d-printed-face-prosthesis/) for a cyclist that had been in a serious accident. In another example from last year, the South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust successfully implanted its [first patient-specific wrist implant](https://www.voxelmatters.com/warwickshire-nhs-trust-completes-first-3d-printed-wrist-implant/).

At Christie NHS Trust, the focus on AM will continue, as the center is reportedly already planning to invite additional staff, including apprentices, to the 3D printing training course. Down the line, it may also expand the training scope to include courses in advanced design and other additive manufacturing technologies. "Implementing additive manufacturing into our workflow was complex, but the Skills Bootcamp has provided our team with a solution-oriented mindset," concluded Ryan Young, Deputy Head of Engineering in the center's Medical Physics and Engineering Department. "The skill set acquired is a clear win for our continuous professional development and clinical efficiency."
