Chemson Group, worldwide leaders in the PVC stabilizer additives industry, will display and demonstrate the company’s industrial Additive Manufacturing material, known as 3DVinyl at this year’s Rapid + TCT event in Pittsburgh.

Prior to the initial May 2016 announcement of the technological breakthrough, the 3DVinyl™ invention underwent rigorous lab and field testing, thus enabling Chemson to gather deeper understanding of the industrial potential of the invention and, with the input of international AM/3DP subject matter experts, to further refine the technology.

“All we set out to do originally was prove that it COULD be done in the first place. No one had ever successfully formulated PVC for Additive Manufacturing, so that was where we originally set our R&D sights,” said Greg Harrison, former MD of Chemson Pacific, now Technical Consultant for Additive Manufacturing materials at Chemson and 3DVinyl co-inventor. “After nearly two years of work, we achieved that milestone and announced the invention at the Australian Vinyl Council PVC Conference in Melbourne, Australia last May.”

3D VINYL is the world’s first thermoplastic PVC formulation, designed specifically for the Additive Manufacturing and industrial 3D printing sector. A year on from the launch announcement, Chemson is bringing a more mature technology to the Rapid event.

“We are coming to Rapid with a new set of objectives – to establish new professional and industrial relationships to better understand customer needs and expand the evaluation and field testing network as we approach commercialization. We hope to engage and collaborate with industry to help us further improve the current formulation within the context of industrial and product manufacturing use cases that can’t be effectively emulated in our lab and previous field testing environments”, said Dennis Planner, 3DVinyl Product Manager and co-inventor. “We welcome expressions of interest from all those interested in evaluating 3DVinyl and discussing collaborative use cases”.

Over the last 12 months, with the help of a select group of AM/3DP experts and hardware manufacturers including Titan 3D Robotics, Push Plastic and 3DMatter, Chemson has been able to address critical aspects of Z-axis interlayer adhesion, warpage, impact resistance and thermal stability, consistently improving performance of the material.

“After this initial success of having a printable version of PVC in the form of 3DVinyl, the international Chemson team is currently undertaking concerted efforts to adapt PVC’s well established unique potential and versatility for applications in the 3D Printing/AM world”, says Dr. J.-Dieter Klamann, MD of Chemson Pacific and 3DVinyl co-inventor. “These new PVC products will be introduced step-by-step into the 3DP community after basic 3D printability is assessed in our rigorous pre-tests. We look forward to the discussions at the RAPID event to assist us in determining the next grades of PVC to target for 3DVinyl developments.”

In addition to the standard filament form factor, Chemson 3D Vinyl will also be available as pelletized compound to address the proliferation of large aperture, high flow-rate extrusion systems. This will provide the advantages of PVC’s unique material and mechanical characteristics and well-established industrial integrity to a wider professional and industrial audience, including those verticals contending with demanding or extreme environments such as aerospace, construction, marine, water treatment/processing and renewables, as well as general and specialized manufacturing.
