A look at CES 2020 Innovation Award honorees in 3D printing

With CES 2020 kicking off today, there is a ton of buzz around consumer electronics. As one might expect, 3D printing has figured in to the event in a significant way. Yesterday, for instance, we reported that Korean beauty giant Amorepacific was presenting its new 3D printed facial sheet masks at CES 2020. Now, we’ll take a look at some of the other 3D printing products that are being highlighted in Las Vegas this week.

Every year, the CES Innovation Awards honor a select number of outstanding products in the consumer electronics area. Last year, only one honoree in the 3D printing category was named: a 3D printed titanium hearing aid called Phonak Virto B-Titanium. This year, the focus on additive has apparently increased, with four honorees in the 3D Printing category.

The first, which we spoke about already, is Amorepacific, which developed a special hydrogel 3D printing process in collaboration with Lincsolution for its custom skincare products. The other 3D printing honorees in the CES 2020 Innovation Awards are the Snapmaker 2.0 3D printer, the da Vinci Color 5D 3D printer by XYZprinting and Volumic 3D’s ULTRA Supercharged 3D printer.

Let’s take a closer look:

Snapmaker 2.0 3D printer

The Snapmaker 2.0 is a modular 3D printer that raised over $7.8 million on Kickstarter this past Spring, breaking records as the most funded technology project on the crowdfunding platform.

The 3-in-1 Snapmaker 2.0 3D printer—featured in a Kickstarter this past May—followed the original Snapmaker machine, which launched in 2017. Since then, the Shenzhen-based Snapmaker team has worked to improve the 3D printer, adding additional functions and modularity based on customer feedback.

The result of this work is the Snapmaker 2.0, an $879 desktop system with 3D printing, CNC carving and laser engraving functions. Among one of the most notable upgrades to the new system is a Controlled Area Network (CAN) bus expansion, which allows for wireless information transmission. The Snapmaker 2.0 is reportedly the first 3D printer to integrate CAN bus protocol.

“The Snapmaker team has been blown away by the public response to the Snapmaker 2.0 so far,” said Daniel Chen, CEO of Snapmaker. “We were proud to see that not only was the Snapmaker 2.0 the most funded technology project on Kickstarter, but we are honored with the CES Innovation Award now. We are excited to show the Snapmaker 2.0 at CES, expanding the reach of the Snapmaker 2.0 even further.”

da Vinci Color 5D 3D printer

XYZprinting’s da Vinci Color 5D is another multi-functional system that combines full-color 3D printing, 2D inkjet paper printing and laser engraving in a single system. The 3-in-1 3D printer was unveiled in September 2019.

The 3D printer recognized by CES 2020 also integrates upgrades in terms of its color 3D printing capabilities. According to Taiwan-based XYZprinting, the system offers three times better color saturation than before thanks to combination of new CMYK inks and a special color-absorbing PLA filament.

“The da Vinci Color 5D can be used by a wide range of people but will be particularly useful to small businesses and designers, thanks to its high-quality printing and ease of use,” said Fernando Hernandez, EMEA MD of XYZprinting, at the printer’s release. “The 2D printing and laser engraver features make the da Vinci Color 5D a world first, and the most complete and user-friendly desktop 3D printing unit developed. Entrepreneurs and creators will truly have the ability to bring their creations to life.”

ULTRA Supercharged 3D printer

CES 2020 Innovation Awards Volumic 3D

France-based Volumic 3D’s ULTRA Supercharged 3D printer has also been named as an honoree in CES 2020 Innovation Awards.

The FDM-based system boasts “three times faster” printing speeds compared to competitors and is compatible with a broad range of over 50 materials, including engineering-grade plastics and fiber-reinforced polymers.

The powerful extrusion system has also been included as an honoree in the category of Sustainability, Eco-Design and Smart Energy, likely because of its ability to 3D print 100% recycled and biodegradable materials.

The ULTRA Supercharged 3D printer retails starting at €5,980.
