Carbon Introduces New SIL 30 Silicone Urethane Material

Carbon is introducing the new SIL 30, a silicone urethane material, offering a unique combination of biocompatibility, low durometer, and tear resistance. SIL 30 opens up the ability to print customized applications for comfortable skin contact products such as headphones, wristbands, and various attachments for wearables. SIL 30 is a specialty material available for specific production applications.

SIL is comparable to commercial TPEs with a Shore A hardness of 35. CLIP technology enables 3D printing with novel classes of polymers, including complex chemistries such as polyurethane and cyanate ester-based resins. The result is a diverse and growing selection of materials reflecting common engineering requirements.

Carbon is also announcing that the following resins successfully passed biocompatibility testing per ISO 10993-5 and -10:

All of these resins are suitable for long-term (>30 days) skin contact. Similarly, all can be used for short-term (<24 hours) mucosal contact except EPU 40*, which is suitable for skin contact only. Carbon expects to gather similar data for additional resins in the near future.

This success is a testimony to Carbon’s efforts in developing data to support the safe use of our materials in biomedical applications and for consumer applications where resins are in long-term direct skin contact or short-term mucosal contact. Carbon engaged with NAMSA, a leader in biocompatibility testing, who performed biocompatibility testing consistent with the FDA’s recommendations for the use of ISO 10993 standards as a measure of biocompatibility.
