Digital manufacturing company Carbon has announced the appointment of Ellen J. Kullman as its new President and CEO. Kullman, who previously served as Chairman and CEO of DuPont, will replace Dr. Joseph M. DeSimone, who will be taking on the role of Executive Chairman of the Board.

The appointment is part of Carbon’s strategy to strengthen its leadership for the purpose of growing the business. The appointment of Kullman as President and CEO will support the company’s transition into its next chapter. In addition to her new leadership roles, Kullman will continue to sit on Carbon’s board of directors, where she has served since 2016.

“Today’s announcement is a great honor,” said Kullman. “I am privileged to have spent the last few years on the Carbon board working alongside Joe, one of the greatest entrepreneurs and scientists of our time. Joe has built Carbon into the world’s leading digital manufacturing platform, and as President and CEO of Carbon, I am excited to partner with Joe and build on the solid foundations he’s put into place.”

In her new role, Kullman will head the development and execution of both short and long-term strategies with a focus on delivering value to customers, employees, partners and shareholders. DeSimone, for his part, will focus on growing mainstream adoption of Carbon’s digital manufacturing solutions, promoting and spreading the company’s vision to existing and prospective clients as well as the general public.

“For the last six years, I have led Carbon as Chief Executive Officer and am enormously proud of what we’ve accomplished during my tenure,” said DeSimone, who founded Carbon in 2013. “I know what we will accomplish under Ellen will be even more extraordinary. Ellen is the right person to lead Carbon today. She has broad experience across multiple businesses, cycles, and geographies. Her vision, outstanding leadership traits, and distinguished track record will continue to drive Carbon’s growth into the future. In assuming the Executive Chairman role, I will be able to focus on evangelizing the platform and driving adoption more widely.”

Kullman has extensive experience in industrial sectors. Prior to working at chemical giant DuPont, she worked for Westinghouse and General Electric. Upon joining DuPont in 1988, she worked her way up, becoming the company’s first female leader (with her appointment as CEO in 2009). Under her leadership, DuPont saw double-digit growth in its Safety and Protection portfolio and launched two high-growth businesses: DuPont Industrial Biosciences and DuPont Sustainable Solutions.

Today, Kullman serves as co-chair of the Paradigm for Parity coalition and as a board director for United Technologies, Dell Technologies, Amgen and Goldman Sachs. She is also a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and serves on the board of trustees at Northwestern University. Other accolades include being named one of the “50 Most Powerful Women in Business” by Fortune and one of the “World’s Most Powerful Women” by Forbes.
