# Caracol and V2 Group collaborate on 6-meter monolithic catamaran 3D print

[Global leader in advanced robotic technologies Caracol](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/caracol-studio/) has completed what it claims is “the first functional 6-meter-long monolithic catamaran for open waters” built entirely using its LFAM platform, in collaboration with Spanish leisure craft specialists V2 Group.

The hull, measuring 5m x 2.3m x 1.5m and weighing 1,200 kilograms, was completed using [Caracol's Heron 400 robotic platform](https://www.voxelmatters.com/caracol-develops-smart-3d-printing-systems-for-large-components/) and printed in a single, uninterrupted 160-hour run.

The companies used recycled polypropylene reinforced with glass fiber (rPP GF), extruded through an 8mm nozzle for the print, which produced a seamless, monolithic structure that Caracol claims reduced the need for secondary assembly. It also contributed to structural integrity.

Post-processing steps included CNC machining, gel coating, and painting, and compared with traditional production methods the companies reported a 30% reduction in material waste, and a 20% reduction in lead time.

## In search of a scalable solution

The project was designed from the outset with industrialization in mind and prior to the full-scale print, targeted tests were conducted on critical hull sections. Those tests were performed on areas with complex reinforcements and integrated geometries. 

The design and slicing phases required additional time given the hull's scale and geometric complexity. However, these were preparatory steps which are one-time efforts per boat model, claimed Caracol, and once part of an established production run can be applied to subsequent prints of the same design, adding further reductions in preparation time across future builds.

## An industry shift

The project has been positioned by Caracol as part of a [broader shift in the nautical sector away from high-volume, mold-dependent production methods](https://www.voxelmatters.com/ferretti-turns-to-robotic-lfam-from-caracol-to-produce-pershing-gtx116-grilles/) such as polyester and fiberglass lamination, and towards smaller-batch and custom vessel production. 

The elimination of molds and implementation of an additive approach enabled design iteration without retooling costs, and the companies now intend to continue developing the manufacturing process toward full industrialization.

The long-term goal? “A more scalable, sustainable, and accessible production model within the sector”.
