# Can 3D printing reinvent the lasagna?

You'd be forgiven if your first reaction when hearing the words "3D printed lasagna" was utter disbelief. After all, lasagna, one of the first pasta types ever created, is characterized by its flat, two-dimensional shape. But Barilla brand [BluRhapsody](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/blurhapsody/) is daring to reinvent the classic lasagna using its [pasta 3D printing](https://www.voxelmatters.com/category/food-3d-printing/) technology.

[![BluRhapsody lasagna 3D pasta](https://www.voxelmatters.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/lasagna-3d-2-493x640.jpg)](https://www.voxelmatters.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/lasagna-3d-2.jpg)

The brand, which launched its [pasta 3D printing service in 2017](https://www.voxelmatters.com/blurhapsody-launches-3d-printed-pasta-service-real-time-video/) and made its products commercially available [in 2022](https://www.voxelmatters.com/3d-printed-pasta-created-by-barillas-blurhapsody-in-italy-of-course/), now offers a variety of different 3D printed pasta products, ranging from flower-inspired shapes, to star-shaped 3D pasta, to complex amphora shapes. These edible products, and the 3D printed lasagna, are made from a durum wheat semolina dough, which is kneaded and then extruded into a variety of shapes based on a 3D model. The fresh pasta can then be boiled and served with different fillings and sauces for a unique finger-food experience.

The 3D lasagna, characterized by a spiral, honey-comb-inspired structure, makes it possible to enjoy the flavors of the classic Italian dish in a new way—notably, without fork and knife. "One thing is certain, there is no dish more loved than lasagna," BluRhapsody writes. "Delicious, rich, irresistible… its entrance on the table is always triumphant. The comfort food par excellence for Sundays and family gatherings is reinvented, transforming the aperitif moment into an explosion of irresistible pleasure."

To make the 3D lasagna, all you need to do is boil the 3D printed pasta for 12 minutes and then drain them thoroughly. From there, the pasta can be filled with a stuffing of your choice, whether it's a classic bolognese sauce, bechamel and pesto, or a prosciutto and cheese filling. Like a traditional lasagna, the mini pasta treats can be baked at 180° before serving for that delicious outer layer of crispiness. BluRhapsody's 3D lasagna noodles can be purchased for €15.90 per dozen (or €29,90 per 24 pieces) and the company has provided a number of recipes for inspiration, all of which can be found [here](https://blurhapsody.com/blogs/ricette).

Based out of Parma, Barilla has been making pasta for nearly 150 years. While tradition has remained an important part of the company's ethos, it has clearly also embraced innovation, exploring how newer technologies like 3D printing can break new ground when it comes to Italian cuisine. And whether or not you are happy to call the company's latest product "lasagna", it can't be denied that it looks pretty tasty!
