Bugatti and Siemens use AM to improve Chiron’s aerodynamics control system

Stay up to date with everything that is happening in the wonderful world of AM via our LinkedIn community.

Bugatti Automobiles and Siemens are pushing the limits of performance by perfecting a vehicle that is already perfect with the help of the digital twin. With a team of industry-leading technology companies collaborating, Bugatti has innovated the world’s largest functional vehicle aerodynamics control system, consisting of 3D printed bionic titanium components and carbon fiber reinforced tubes for the 1,500 PS Chiron super sports car.

Accelerating the innovation process by 10X using Siemens’ digital innovation platform, including NX and Simcenter capabilities for generative design, composite design, and multi-physics simulation, the optimized aerodynamics control system results in reduced weight and aerodynamic drag for enhanced vehicle performance.

This platform integrates the end-to-end concept, design, simulation and production process for both the 3D printed titanium components and the carbon fiber composite tubes.

Through this collaboration, Bugatti and Siemens are realizing innovations and benefits such as lightweight and high-strength 3D printed bionic hollow components for the hydraulic real wing control system that reduces the overall system weight by 50%.

The reimagined rear wing system which incorporates innovative connecting rods made of ultra-light thin-walled carbon fiber tubes that are 3X stronger than steel rods of the same dimension, one-quarter of the weight, withstand the high temperatures from the vehicle’s exhaust, and are ceramic-coated for reduced friction.
