Boston Micro Fabrication (BMF), a pioneer in advanced manufacturing solutions for ultra-high precision applications, has announced the opening of its UltraThineer Lab at its U.S. headquarters in Maynard, Massachusetts. The state-of-the-art facility will support the production of UltraThineer veneers, the world’s thinnest cosmetic dental veneers. Using BMF’s proprietary projection micro stereolithography (PµSL) technology, this lab will allow dentists across the United States to offer custom cosmetic enhancements that require significantly less preparation compared to traditional veneers.

The UltraThineer veneers measure just 0.08 mm in thickness and are three times thinner than traditional alternatives, which typically measure around 0.5 mm or more. This ultra-thin structure allows for a precise fit, ensuring exceptional aesthetic results for patients. Furthermore, the design of UltraThineer veneers minimizes tooth reduction, preserving the patient’s natural enamel and reducing the need for invasive procedures. This approach not only maintains the integrity of the teeth but also provides a more comfortable experience for patients by eliminating much of the sensitivity and discomfort associated with traditional veneer processes.

Following FDA 510(k) clearance of its UltraThineer material in spring 2024, BMF has positioned itself at the forefront of conservative cosmetic dentistry. Jessica Birrell, owner of Capture Dental Arts, highlighted that traditional veneers often require significant enamel reduction, which can lead to tooth sensitivity. In contrast, UltraThineer’s ultra-thin zirconia veneers simplify the veneering process, offering patients subtle cosmetic enhancements while preserving their natural teeth. This aligns with the growing demand for minimally invasive dental solutions, where patients prioritize natural aesthetics with less invasive treatments.

The breakthrough in UltraThineer veneers is made possible by BMF’s proprietary PµSL technology. While additive manufacturing has been widely adopted for other dental applications, such as orthodontic aligners, UltraThineer showcases the potential of this technology in cosmetic dentistry. John Kawola, CEO-Global of BMF, described the lab as a critical step in meeting the increasing demand for thinner, less invasive veneers. He emphasized that the new facility will make cosmetic dentistry more seamless and accessible for both dentists and their patients.

As part of its expansion efforts, BMF is actively seeking partnerships with dental labs to bring UltraThineer veneers to practices nationwide. This collaboration provides labs with the opportunity to leverage BMF’s advanced manufacturing capabilities, addressing the growing demand for innovative and precise cosmetic dental solutions. Dental labs interested in joining this initiative are encouraged to reach out to BMF for partnership opportunities.
