# BMW Group targets 2027 for WAAM series production

[BMW Group](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/bmw-group/) is moving to begin series production of components using wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) from 2027, marking a significant milestone in the car manufacturer’s efforts to industrialize 3D printing across its global manufacturing network.

The company's [Additive Manufacturing Campus in Oberschleißheim, Germany](https://www.voxelmatters.com/bmw-group-enhances-recycling-for-3d-printing-material-production/), has produced more than 1.6 million components since opening in 2020, with an additional 100,000 parts manufactured annually at vehicle plants worldwide. Under Timo Göbel, the new head of the AM Campus at BMW Group, the facility is expanding its technology portfolio with a new generation of metal 3D printers, larger build volumes, and automated, digitally networked process chains. BMW Group is also integrating open material systems and open interfaces to connect additive processes with existing production infrastructure.

“Additive manufacturing is now fully integrated across all phases of the product life cycle,” stated Göbel. “3D printed components are used from early development and prototype production all the way to series production and to support the global production network.”

AM components are currently used in series production vehicles across BMW, Mini, Rolls-Royce, and BMW Motorrad. The technology supported the development of BMW's Neue Klasse vehicles and the latest generation of electric drive technology, and vehicle testing with WAAM components has been underway since 2025.

“Through scaling, we will be able to manufacture larger components with significantly improved properties across the entire product development process – and with substantially shorter lead times,” commented Göbel. “For many applications, we will no longer need tooling, which greatly increases flexibility and speed.”

[BMW Group's use of AM in series production dates to 2012](https://www.voxelmatters.com/riding-into-a-3d-future-with-bmw/), when it began producing polymer brackets for the Rolls-Royce Phantom, followed by metal components for the BMW i8 Roadster in 2017.

The IDAM project, completed in 2022, established fully automated, digitally networked production lines for metallic 3D printing.
