Quantum, which was founded with backing from private investors from Spain's Lleida region, including Sorigué, Banasegur, Teberfer and Inversions Vall, will acquire all of BCN3D's assets and operations, including the recently opened [production center in Lleida](https://www.voxelmatters.com/bcn3d-secures-funding-and-unveils-new-factory/). The acquisition comes just months after [BCN3D filed for bankruptcy](https://www.voxelmatters.com/bcn3d-files-for-bankruptcy-amid-ongoing-financial-troubles/). BCN3D was founded in 2012 as a spinout from the CIM-UPC technological center. In its earliest days, the company specialized in RepRap 3D printers (in fact, the company was then known as RepRapBCN). In 2015, the company changed its name to BCN3D and launched the BCN3D Sigma, the first commercial 3D printer based on the company's Independant Dual Extrusion Technology (IDEX). From there, BCN3D further established itself as a manufacturer of desktop extrusion 3D printers, releasing the Sigmax, and eventually expanded into industrial-grade systems with the Epsilon 3D printer. More recently, the company expanded its extrusion portfolio with the launch of the [Omega I60](https://www.voxelmatters.com/bcn3d-unveils-the-omega-i60-high-speed-industrial-3d-printer/), an industrial system designed for the factory floor and a new generation of the [Epsilon Series](https://www.voxelmatters.com/bcn3d-upgrades-epsilon-series-of-3d-printers/). BCN3D also expanded beyond extrusion-based 3D printing, launching its Viscous Lithography Manufacturing (VLM) resin-based technology, which was eventually separated from BCN3D under a new company, [Supernova](https://www.voxelmatters.com/bcn3d-converts-vlm-business-unit-to-independent-supernova/), with headquarters in Austin, Texas, and Barcelona, Spain. Despite the popularity of its hardware solutions—used by BMW, NASA shoe company Camper, mobility solutions company Alstom and MIT, among others—the company's revenues were limited to about €5 million annually, which meant it was facing significant losses. Fortunately, through the acquisition by newly formed Quantum, BCN3D's operations will continue on. According to the company, the acquisition deal guarantees the continuity of operations and full team retention. "With the support of Quantum, BCN3D now enters a more focused phase—leaner, more agile, and better positioned to continue delivering advanced 3D printing solutions to the light industrial market," the company said. Quantum will reportedly build on BCN3D's existing infrastructure and investments to ensure that everything the original company built over the years continues to evolve. BCN3D added: "Quantum will build on this foundation to drive innovation, strengthen BCN3D’s position in the light industrial market, and expand its offering to meet the changing needs of modern manufacturing."
