Bambu Lab & Insta360 launch 3D printing design challenge for Luna Ultra camera
Camera brand Insta360, known for its 360-degree cameras, has teamed up with 3D printing company Bambu Lab to market its new flagship product, the Luna Ultra dual-lens 8K gimbal camera, in a highly creative way. Together, the companies have launched a design challenge via Bambu Lab’s MakerWorld platform that invites makers and creators to design and 3D print custom accessories and mods for the Luna Ultra.
Officially launching today, the “Insta360 Luna Ultra Design Challenge on MakerWorld” will run until until August 9, 2026. This means that over the course of the month, makers can submit their 3D printed designs and have the chance to win one of 40 prizes worth a total of over $11,000. At the center of the design challenge is the Luna Ultra, a versatile dual-lens gimbal camera, co-engineered with Leica and launched last month.
To facilitate the design process within the maker community, Insta360 and Bambu Lab have released 3MF and STL design files for the Luna Ultra camera on MakerWorld. With these files, makers can unleash their creativity and create custom camera parts, including practical gear like filming rigs and stability mounts, as well as “creative mods” like custom camera covers and housings.
The contest comprises two tracks. The first is the Model Design Challenge, in which makers can upload their unique 3D printable Luna Ultra accessories to MakerWorld with the hashtag #PrintForLuna. Based on these submissions, Bambu Lab and Insta360 will select two winners who will be awarded an Insta360 Goodie Bag and 200 MakerWorld points, which can be redeemed for Bambu Lab products.
The second challenge track is the Social Content Challenge, where creators are invited to share their unique ideas and 3D prints via social media (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, or Reddit) with the hashtags #PrintForLuna, #BambuLab, and #Insta360LunaUltra. The most creative and practical ideas in this track will each be awarded an Insta360 Luna Ultra bundle and a new Bambu Lab X2D Combo 3D printer, worth a combined total of $1669. Other prizes include coupons and gift cards. There is also a Mystery Grand Prize, for which the partners will choose a particularly standout 3D printed accessory to be turned into an official product.
“We see a shift where creativity doesn’t stop at capturing images—it extends into building and shaping the tools themselves,” said Max Richter, co-founder and VP of marketing at Insta360. “This collaboration between Insta360 and Bambu Lab brings together imaging and the maker community for the first time in this way, bringing creators the freedom to push the boundaries of what’s possible.”
Insta360 is not the only brand that has recently turned to 3D printing to encourage creativity and customization amongst its customers. Last month, Google released design specifications for its new FitBit Air in the form of 2D CAD drawings and invited customers to design their own watch straps or FitBit Air housings using technologies like 3D printing.
