Bambu Lab clarifies issues related to latest security update
Also providing updates on third-party integration with Bambu Connect

Since announcing its security enhancements for X-series printers, Bambu Lab has responded to both constructive community feedback and what the company defines as “misinformation circulating online”. Input from print farm owners and other users has shaped the company’s approach to balancing security with operational flexibility. At the same time, Bambu Lab has addressed and refuted several claims about its updates, with specific references to the new Bambu Connect system.
The company has categorically denied allegations suggesting that it plans to remotely disable printers, block functionality, or restrict the use of third-party filaments and software. Accusations of backdoors in firmware, killswitch mechanisms, or mandatory subscriptions have also been dismissed as untrue. Bambu Lab remains dedicated to supporting user autonomy while prioritizing security and functionality.
Specifically, Bambu Lab stresses that the following claims are entirely false:
- Bambu Lab will remotely disable your printer (“brick” it).
- Firmware updates will block your printer’s ability to print.
- AMS functionality will be restricted, and the use of third-party filament will be disabled.
- Bambu Lab firmware contains trojans or backdoors for unauthorized remote control.
- The printers have a timed killswitch that disables them after a certain period.
- All 3D files printed are monitored, duplicated, or stolen.
- A subscription will be mandatory to use your printer.
Bambu Lab introduced an optional LAN mode with two distinct configurations to address user needs. The default Standard Mode offers robust security through an authorization process without requiring internet access or user accounts, ensuring ease of use for most users. Advanced users can enable Developer Mode, which allows specific communication protocols like MQTT, live streaming, and FTP to remain open. This configuration provides greater flexibility but requires manual activation, with users responsible for securing their local networks. Bambu Lab does not provide support for this mode.
The company also highlighted that the new Bambu Connect interface ensures seamless integration with third-party software while enhancing security. Contrary to speculation, the update is not intended to create a closed ecosystem but to maintain compatibility with tools like Orca Slicer. The integration process has been designed to preserve a familiar workflow, requiring only minor adjustments to ensure secure command transmission and monitoring. Bambu Lab has also clarified that its Live View service operates through peer-to-peer (P2P) connections, with server forwarding only used as a fallback option. Importantly, no video content is stored on servers, ensuring user privacy.
How Bambu Connect works:
Recognizing the importance of print farm management software, Bambu Lab developed an integration tool to support these systems under the updated security protocols. Several vendors have already begun implementing these tools, and Bambu Lab invites further collaboration from developers to maintain compatibility for print farm managers.
Bambu Lab has also addressed concerns related to Panda Touch, a product relying on exploited MQTT protocols. The company warned BTT before the product’s mass shipment that this reliance would become unsustainable. Despite these warnings, BTT proceeded with shipments, leading to complications now being misrepresented. Bambu Lab remains committed to transparent communication and proactive collaboration with developers.
To accommodate its diverse user base, Bambu Lab provides multiple options. Users can choose to continue using their current firmware without updates, adopt the new firmware to take advantage of enhanced tools or activate Developer Mode for custom solutions while assuming responsibility for local network security.
Bambu Lab reaffirms its dedication to innovation, security, and community needs through these updates. Developers and users are encouraged to collaborate and ensure the continued growth of the Bambu Lab ecosystem. Inquiries can be directed to devpartner@bambulab.com.
