Swedish filament spool manufacturer Axjo has introduced a new line of filament spools made from 100% recycled plastic. A filament spool should be packaging-friendly to ensure the filament is wound up neatly, resulting in sleek and functional packaging for the product. Axjo spent many years developing and fine-tuning filament spools that are not only functional for sensitive filament but also user-friendly and compatible with winding machines, as well as being sustainable in several ways.

How can a spool be sustainable in several ways? Axjo filament spools are made from 100% recycled material. This means the material has already had a previous life, and after recycling, it is compounded an in-house lab to become technically stable recycled material for manufacturing new filament spools. Products made from this recycled material have up to 78% lower climate impact compared to those made from new materials.

Why use plastic filament spools when there are other environmentally friendly alternatives? Products made from recycled plastic material that are used, recycled, and reused multiple times have a lower CO2 footprint than equivalent products made from other materials. Axjo promotes reuse by upcycling materials to create products with the lowest possible environmental impact.

In the company’s Swedish production facility, 95% of products are made from 100% recycled material, and in the USA facility, Axjo exclusively manufactures using 100% recycled material. With this in-house expertise, the company can repurpose plastic that would otherwise burden other companies, giving it new life in products designed with sustainability in mind.

Axjo offers various circular solutions to complement production and products. These include circular solutions in Sweden and Finland for cable drums, reels, and spools, including those manufactured by competitors. The company is continually exploring new opportunities to develop a simple recycling system for filament spools. For the time being users can recycle filament spools at a regular plastic recycling station.
