# Automation Alley’s Project DIAMOnD launches peer-to-peer 3D printing marketplace

Started in 2020 by Automation Alley with funding from Oakland County, [Project DIAMOnD](https://www.voxelmatters.com/project-diamond-to-3d-print-tourniquets-for-ukraine/) was founded with the aim of equipping small and medium-sized manufacturers with Industry 4.0 technologies as well as building a reliable on-demand AM infrastructure. Today, Michigan-based Project DIAMOnD has progressed significantly on these fronts, having grown to become one of the, if not the largest distributed 3D printing networks in the US. As a signal of its continued growth and expanding ambition, the initiative has launched a new peer-to-peer additive manufacturing marketplace.

The new marketplace offers companies a secure platform for submitting 3D print jobs, which small manufacturers based around the state of Michigan can fulfill. The distributed manufacturing marketplace also enables large-scale production by leveraging Project DIAMOnD's full network of printers, while ensuring that part IP is protected and transactions are secure. From the perspective of a 3D printing network partner, this new peer-to-peer platform shares costs and payments with all participating manufacturers.

The announcement of the new marketplace follows another recent milestone revealed by Automation Alley, that Project DIAMOnD had successfully completed over 50,000 3D print jobs since it first launched. Over the years, theses jobs have been completed by Oakland County small businesses who have received grant-funded 3D printers and training through the initiative.

"These accomplishments demonstrate the incredible potential of distributed manufacturing to strengthen supply chains, foster innovation and keep production local," commented Pavan Muzumdar, CEO of Project DIAMOnD and COO of Automation Alley. "With the marketplace, we've created a mechanism for companies to access advanced additive manufacturing without having to own the equipment themselves. Designers don't even need a printer to benefit. They can simply submit their designs, have them produced securely across the network and know their intellectual property is protected. This is how small businesses transform the way manufacturing happens in Michigan."

The new peer-to-peer marketplace will specialize in at scale production with the express goal of giving designers and customers access to the "full power of the distributed network". This means that local groups and individuals interested in printing large volumes of components can do so while benefiting from the security of the network. Automation Alley also invites interested manufacturers to join its Project DIAMOnD network, through which they can receive a free 3D printer and training.

While the specific make of the grant-funded 3D printer that businesses will receive is not disclosed, Project DIAMOnD has worked with Massachusetts-based [Markforged](https://www.3dprintingbusiness.directory/company/markforged/), which in [2021 supplied 3D printers](https://www.voxelmatters.com/project-diamond-welcomes-markforged-to-improve-michigan-am/) to the Project DIAMOnD network. Notably, over 300 Markforged systems were used by Project DIAMOnD to 3D print [clips for tourniquets that were sent to Ukraine](https://www.voxelmatters.com/project-diamond-to-3d-print-tourniquets-for-ukraine/).
