AtrimusRx has become the first community pharmacy operator in Sweden to receive regulatory validation for incorporating additive manufacturing into its extemporaneous pharmaceutical compounding process. The milestone signifies a shift in how prescription medicines are produced for patients, and particularly children, who cannot be adequately served by commercially available formulations.

The capability is delivered through the company’s Atrimus Px (Prescription Precision) framework, which produces medicines tailored to individual clinical requirements, including age, body weight, and prescribed dose. The platform supports dose individualization starting at 2 mg, with quarter-milligram adjustments in the low-dose range. That offers a degree of precision with direct clinical relevance in treatments where narrow therapeutic indices leave little margin for error.

Closing a gap in pediatric care

The absence of child-appropriate medicines has been an issue in clinical practice for some time. Without suitable commercial formulations, adult medications are routinely split, crushed, or mixed with food in hospitals, pharmacies, and homes to approximate the required dose — a process that introduces dosing variability and shifts responsibility for accuracy away from the medicinal product itself.

AtrimusRx’s compounding platform produces medicines directly against a physician’s prescription, removing the need for downstream manipulation. The system also supports gradual dose titration, including escalation and tapering regimens, and can combine multiple active pharmaceutical ingredients into a single dosage form.

“The establishment of Atrimus Px as a validated part of our pharmacy operations marks a significant milestone for precision medicine in Sweden,” Nicky Nadem, Chief Executive Officer of AtrimusRx, told VoxelMatters.

“For too long, pediatric care has relied on the manual manipulation of adult medications. By integrating additive manufacturing into our daily workflow at the pharmacy, we are moving the technology from a research setting into real-world patient care. Our focus is to ensure that vulnerable patient groups, especially children, have access to the same dosage precision and safety as adult patients.”

Supply chain implications

Beyond individual patient care, AtrimusRx has positioned the model as a contribution to broader pharmaceutical supply resilience. Localized, prescription-driven manufacturing closer to the point of care could reduce dependence on centralized supply chains during disruptions, crises, or shortages.

The company is a partner in RoboPharma – Agile Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, a European initiative co-funded through the EU4Health program and which is developing decentralized manufacturing solutions for pharmacy and hospital settings.
