# ASTM partners with major OEMs to launch AM certification program

[ASTM International’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE)](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/astm-international/) introduced a new manufacturer certification program crafted to bolster quality assurance, streamline regulatory compliance, and enforce rigorous process control across AM production environments. As the use of additive manufacturing expands across industries, the need for a robust, AM-specific certification standard has become increasingly critical.

Traditional quality management system (QMS) standards like ISO-9001, AS9100, ISO-13485, and IATF-16949 have long served as foundational frameworks for quality assurance. However, these standards are not designed to address the unique variables and challenges inherent to AM. Recognizing this gap, the AM CoE developed a certification program tailored specifically for AM. The goal is not to replace traditional QMS standards, but rather to build upon them with an added layer of AM-specific protocols that address process intricacies, material variability, and risk management within the context of additive manufacturing.

To ensure a comprehensive and industry-aligned program, the AM CoE formed the Additive Manufacturing Certification Committee (AMCC), comprising over 25 prominent end users such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Safran, Ford Motor Company, Stryker, Becton Dickinson, and General Motors. This diverse collaboration has produced a certification program that reflects a shared understanding of quality expectations within AM and offers validation for processes that go beyond the generic scope of legacy QMS standards.

This certification initiative aims to set unified, technically rigorous benchmarks for AM manufacturers while keeping the process feasible and relevant for real-world applications. The audit framework is built upon well-established, internationally recognized standards, including ISO/ASTM 52901, ISO/ASTM 52904, and ISO/ASTM 52920. This integration ensures the program maintains credibility and compatibility with global quality expectations.

Dr. Martin White, Director of Technical Operations at ASTM International, highlighted the transformative potential of the program, stating that aligning end-user requirements with third-party validation can significantly enhance the application of AM in high-performance sectors. According to Dr. White, this certification effectively bridges the existing qualification gap for manufacturers striving to meet rigorous industry and regulatory demands.

It is designed to eliminate the need for repetitive audits by consolidating certification efforts into a single, AM-focused evaluation. This reduces both time and cost and improves transparency between original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and their suppliers. By providing a clear pathway to compliance and demonstrating readiness to meet the highest quality and safety benchmarks, the certification helps manufacturers accelerate the commercialization of AM technologies.
