ASTM hosting symposium addressing structural integrity of 3D printed parts
Standards organization ASTM International is preparing to host its fourth Symposium on Structural Integrity of Additive Manufactured Materials and Parts next month. The focus of the event—which follows on the success of the 2018 edition—will be on addressing the structural integrity of parts made using additive manufacturing.
The symposium will be hosted in Oxon Hill, Maryland from October 7-10 and will bring together members from the additive manufacturing industry from across the world. In 2018, 225 people from 11 countries attended the symposium and 60 organizations from industry, government and academia presented.
This year, participants will come together to discuss and learn about the structural integrity of 3D printed parts. The goal will be to take steps towards establishing a feedstock-process-structure-property-performance relationship in the AM process to ensure the structural integrity of parts. Other topics that will be addressed include design principles, the lack of industry standards related to structural integrity of parts and challenges surrounding qualification and certification.
In the three-and-a-half days of the event, about 130 talks are reportedly scheduled. An entire half-day will be devoted to a student competition, which will consist of presenting student papers and selecting top three winners.
“The Symposium offers a unique opportunity to bring together minds in industry and academia across the globe to propel the viable future of additive manufacturing. We are excited to have a lot of non-US colleagues and experts joining us for this major annual event in additive manufacturing,” commented Dr. Nima Shamsaei from Auburn University, who is co-chairing the event with Dr. Mohsen Seifi from ASTM International.
“Dedicated focus on structural integrity in AM is necessary to building a strong foundation in realizable and certifiable production in a variety of mission-critical applications,” added Seifi. “We welcome discussion and look forward to a productive fourth event.”
The symposium will include a range of sessions that will address additive manufacturing’s role and adoption in a variety of industries, including aerospace, spaceflight, medical, transportation/heavy machinery, maritime, electronics, construction, oil and gas and consumer.
Registration for ASTM International’s fourth Symposium is now open.
