# Artist Raphaël Emine 3D prints stunning insect dwellings

We've seen 3D printing being used to [construct homes for people](https://www.voxelmatters.com/3d-printed-social-housing-is-taking-off-internationally/), but the technology is now also being put to use to house other, far smaller species. French artist Raphaël Emine, who specializes in sculpture and ceramics, has turned to 3D printing in the design and creation of a series of sculptures intended to house insects and other small organisms. The sculptures, part of the artist's *Utopies entomologiques *series, blend organic design, natural materials and traditional clay modeling with advanced technological production to an amazing effect.

Insect homes, or bug hotels, have gained popularity in recent years, with people placing the small structures in their backyards or in urban areas to support the proliferation of insect species and encourage biodiversity. You've probably seen these around: they are typically made of wood and have lots of small holes and tubes for insects to burrow in. Emine's insect structures go above and beyond, remaining functional and eco-friendly while introducing intricate and beautiful designs.

The *Utopies entomologiques *sculptures were made in part using 3D printing technology from Italian firm [WASP](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/wasproject/). Specifically, Emine used the WASP 40100 LDM, a large-format system designed to print clay, stoneware, porcelain and earthenware parts up to one meter in height, and the Delta WASP 2040 Clay, a smaller machine also designed to print a range of ceramics. The artist also relied on WASP's Continuous Feeding System, which makes it possible to print continuously without having to replace material tanks or cartridges mid print. Recently, WASP's 40100 Production system was also used to [3D print artificial coral](https://www.voxelmatters.com/wasp-to-live-print-coral-reef-modules-at-formnext-2024/).

In designing the luxury insect real estate, Emine drew from natural structures and designs, like honeycombs, spider webs, mineral formations and plant fractals to create a dynamic environment suitable for a range of insects and other living organisms, like moss and plants. The artist also integrated various tunnels, corridors and balconies into the design, some of which do look like miniature versions of recognizable architectural features.

According to Emine's website, his work is overall "inspired by mathematical principles, botany, entomology, as well as human-shaped architectures and animal constructions." Further, "by introducing living elements such as plants, insects, and bacteria into his works, he explores how nature and creation can coexist and interact, at the intersection of utopian architecture, the plant world and decorative arts."

Fittingly, WASP's technology was also used to make a series of 3D printed nests that somewhat resemble wasp nests.  This project, called *The Nests, *is installed at Parc Maison Blanche in Marseille, where they hang from dead palm trees and attract insect populations that play a role in pollination, pest control and the area's biodiversity. The *Utopies entomologiques* sculptures, for their part, are on perennial display in Paris, where the environment is intended to grow around them and insects can thrive in them.
