# Apiar launches 3D printed titanium Gen1.0 MR² watch

Since 2022, [London-based Apiar](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/apiar/) has positioned itself as one of the few watchmakers willing to drag horology into the realm of advanced engineering. Their ethos - build the impossible - leans on generative design, additive manufacturing, and a British-heavy supply chain to rethink what a modern mechanical watch can be. Their latest release pushes that mission into unexpected territory: the Gen1.0 MR², a grade-23 titanium timepiece born from a social-media identity mix-up and developed in collaboration with two different men named Max Resnick.

The catalyst was an Instagram post by Time + Tide that mistakenly credited the wrong Max Resnick as the designer of Apiar’s Gen1.0. One Max (MR1) was the designer. The other (MR2) is a prominent researcher in the Solana blockchain ecosystem. Instead of brushing it off, Apiar embraced the confusion.

## The combination of two worlds

The MR² keeps the engineering-driven geometry of the original Dawn & Dusk versions but integrates subtle references to cryptography, blockchain culture, and Solana - including Apiar’s first move into accepting cryptocurrency (SOL and USDC) for its watches.

MR2’s background in highly secure blockchain protocols offered an immediate design direction: the SHA-256 hashing function. In networks like Solana, SHA-256 generates unique 'digital fingerprints' for every block and transaction. Apiar adapted this idea into a caseback engraving that weaves the SHA-256 diagram into a bespoke map of the watch’s identity - its edition number, collaborators, and technical specs, laser-annealed directly into the titanium. Each of the 30 watches carries its own 'cryptographic signature', permanently sealed into the metal.

The dial design mirrors MR2’s personal journey into the Solana ecosystem. Rather than applying a logo, Apiar and MR1 reinterpreted the Solana mark as a CNC-machined guilloché-style pattern. After machining, the dial is sandblasted, its raised islands polished, then finished with a tinted lacquer that produces a grey ombré gradient - engineered for subtle depth and strong legibility.

Around the dial sits an additively manufactured chapter ring in titanium, a continuation of Apiar’s signature printed geometry. The MR² also debuts Apiar’s developing system for interchangeable dials, allowing either a traditional 2D dial or a fully organic 3D printed dial (as on Dawn & Dusk) to fit the same printed mid-case.

## Generative design and additive manufacturing

Apiar’s founders, Matt Oosthuizen and Sam White, are designers and engineers accustomed to high-performance industries. Their Gen1.0 series applies similar generative design principles to watchmaking, resulting in organic, almost skeletal titanium geometries with extreme strength-to-weight ratios.

The MR² uses Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) to print its mid-case and caseback in medical-grade titanium (Ti6Al4V Grade 23), notable for its corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. The fluid lugs and internal structures would be effectively impossible to machine from a solid block without compromising the design.

“My vision for the Gen1.0 would have been impossible with traditional manufacturing… Apiar’s approach gave me total creative freedom, so what we see in real life is exactly what I saw in my head," said MR1.

Co-founder Oosthuizen frames the MR² not as a carefully plotted product but as an opportunistic experiment - a reminder that Apiar’s flexible supply chain allows rapid concept-to-production cycles. “We saw a mix-up and thought, why not make this a reality?” he said. “With the flexibility of our supply chain, we can explore ideas without worrying about restrictions.”

The Gen1.0 MR² is capped at just 30 pieces. Pricing is £2,220 (or £2,664 including VAT), equivalent to roughly 15 SOL at launch.
