# Anduril and Archer unveil autonomous VTOL platform built for defense and commercial use

[Anduril Industries](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/anduril-industries/) and Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR) unveiled a jointly developed autonomous VTOL aircraft platform at Farnborough on July 20, 2026, designed to serve both defense and commercial missions from a single dual-use architecture. Anduril showed the defense variant, named Thunder, a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft built to add combat power alongside current and next-generation crewed attack and assault aircraft.

Its Atlanta facility, opened to scale manufacturing capacity toward hundreds of aircraft per year, houses a [dedicated additive manufacturing lab](https://www.voxelmatters.com/andurils-new-atlanta-facility-to-feature-an-additive-manufacturing-lab/) alongside composites and machine shop capabilities. Anduril also [acquired Dive Technologies in 2022](https://www.voxelmatters.com/anduril-industries-acquires-dive-technologies/), bringing large-format additive manufacturing techniques for 3D printed composite underwater vehicles into its unmanned systems lineup.

Separately, Anduril partnered with Oak Ridge National Laboratory to develop large format 3D printed panels for underwater vehicle hulls, validating the parts under high-pressure testing before installing them on a working prototype. The company's planned Arsenal manufacturing facility is also expected to fold 3D printing into a broader software-defined production platform for autonomous systems. [Archer, on the other hand, has worked with GKN Aerospace](https://www.voxelmatters.com/gkn-aerospace-and-archer-expand-collaboration-on-manufacture-of-key-airframe-components-in-the-uk/) as an external contractor for advanced manufacturing. However, it has not been detailed whether any of these processes feed directly into Thunder's structure.

Optimum-speed tiltrotors vary rotor RPM to maintain efficiency across flight regimes, cutting power demand and fuel burn in cruise while reducing the acoustic signature during low-altitude approach. The tiltrotor configuration combines vertical takeoff and landing with wingborne cruise, letting the platform operate from austere locations without runways and without the range limits of conventional rotorcraft.

Archer plans to name its first commercial customers for the platform later this week. The company built Thunder on the dual-use architecture it developed with Anduril, applying electric propulsion and rotor design work from the commercial eVTOL sector to a clean-sheet defense configuration. Anduril and Archer configured the platform to carry modular, heavy payloads across both commercial and defense applications, drawing on Archer's flight testing history with air taxis.

"From raw performance to producibility, harnessing the best technologies from the commercial eVTOL market for defense is central to how Thunder will deliver operational value to our customers. The clean-sheet, dual-use platform that we've built with Archer truly represents a step change in capability," said Shane Arnott, Senior Vice President of Maneuver Dominance at Anduril.

The team has completed multiple test flights with full-scale surrogate aircraft, a step toward validating the systems central to Thunder's performance. First flight of Thunder is planned for 2027.
