# AMGTA report outlines how AM’s true resource efficiency can be evaluated

The [Additive Manufacturer Green Trade Association (AMGTA)](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/amgta/) has released its latest report, entitled *Additive Manufacturing in Resource-Efficient Manufacturing Systems. *The resource, presented at the organization's 2026 Annual Member Summit this past Monday, consists of a guide for evaluating additive manufacturing as a resource-efficient production process.

While up until now, most demonstrations of AM's value as a resource-efficient process have been tied to specific use cases (i.e. a 3D printed aerospace component had a weight reduction of X grams, leading to greater fuel efficiency), the AMGTA suggests that a more structural evaluation paradigm is needed. The group's report, backed by six years of independent observations of both AM technology developers and end users, lays out a helpful framework for this to take place.

"The industry has relied heavily on use-case examples to demonstrate additive manufacturing’s value," the report reads. "The more compelling the example, the more it can make AM look like someone else’s solution. An aerospace lightweighting case impresses an aerospace audience and confirms everyone else’s suspicion that this technology is specialized. A medical device success story does the same. What the industry needs is not more examples—it is a structural explanation of where and why AM changes manufacturing economics that transfers across applications, industries, and organizational contexts. That is what AMGTA’s evaluative framing provides."

In the report, AMGTA outlines how AM should be evaluated at multiple levels, including part, system, and enterprise. This more holistic approach should reveal AM's true resource efficiency, which AMGTA posits is currently misunderstood by doing mere direct production cost comparisons. The current approach, it says, tends to exclude conventional manufacturing costs related to "tooling capital committed before demand is known, inventory carrying costs, minimum order quantity waste, and obsolescence write-offs."

The report also includes a list of dimensions that can help guide "the decisions that actually determine resource and environmental outcomes". These include: Design and Engineering, Materials and Resource Management, Supply Chain & Lifecycle Strategy, Production Configuration, Energy and Resource Intensity, Measurement and Credibility, and Organizational Capability.

As she says, the AMGTA is an independent voice within the AM industry and the only organization focused on AM and resource-efficient manufacturing. While the group relies on industry collaboration—working with technology developers and AM users—its interests are based in providing evidence of AM's impact on sustainability and how the industry can improve on this front.

Brian Neff, Chair of the AMGTA Board of Directors, elaborates: “When I founded AMGTA, the goal was to create something the industry didn’t have: an independent, non-commercial voice that could make the case for AM’s value in the rooms where the real decisions get made. This report is that voice. It makes the argument we’ve been building toward—complete, rigorous, and designed to hold up under scrutiny from finance, procurement, and policy. This is what six years of membership made possible."
