# All eyes on aerospace

Since the earliest days of additive manufacturing, [the aerospace industry](https://www.voxelmatters.com/formnext-aviation-aerospace-voxelmatters-to-present-market-data-and-moderate-key-session/) has been a keen adopter of the technology. Over the years, aerospace companies and OEMs have continued to advance and shape the state of AM, playing a key role in its evolution from a prototyping technology with limited material options to an industrial manufacturing process capable of making critical aircraft components from aerospace-grade metals and polymers. Given the rich history of the intersecting industries—and the highly promising future of AM in aerospace—Formnext has chosen to spotlight the aerospace industry through the framework of Formnext Industry Insights.

Best known for its [annual additive manufacturing expo in Frankfurt](https://www.voxelmatters.com/forget-formnext-focus-on-formnow/) every November, Formnext also keeps very busy throughout the year through its Industry Insights AM innovation hub. The initiative, which promotes expert-driven content, real-world applications stories and more, is putting a special focus on AM in aerospace ahead of its big event in the fall. As part of this focus, [Formnext recently hosted a free webinar](https://www.voxelmatters.com/formnext-aviation-aerospace-voxelmatters-to-present-market-data-and-moderate-key-session/) (moderated by VoxelMatters’ very own Davide Sher) and published an exclusive white paper called “The sky’s (not) the limit”.

The Technology Talk, held on July 9, 2025, invited a panel of experts to discuss the aerospace industry’s latest AM trends, innovative new solutions and what challenges must still be overcome to maximize the technology’s potential. Speakers included Christoph Hauck, Member of the Executive Board at toolcraft AG, Maximilian Strixner, Senior Additive Manufacturing Engineer at The Exploration Company and Scott Sevcik, Director of Advisory Services & Strategic Solutions at Wohlers Associates.

In the “The sky’s (not) the limit” white paper published by Formnext, [which can be accessed for free](https://formnext.mesago.com/frankfurt/en/industry-insights/whitepaper/whitepaper-additive-manufacturing-in-aviation-and-aerospace.html), the organization presents a detailed exploration of additive manufacturing in aerospace, covering the benefits of using the technology (i.e. lightweighting through design optimization, cost reduction and material efficiency), key applications (i.e. rocket engines, interior cabin components and structural parts), the certification processes involved in leveraging AM in the strict aerospace segment and much more.

The white paper is made up of six chapters, the last of which is a helpful list of points to consider when integrating AM in an aerospace context. The checklist covers essential steps, like material certification, tight process controls, long-term performance analysis and much more. The white paper is also chock-full of insights from aerospace and AM experts. On the whole, it’s a digestible and highly educational document that anyone interested in aerospace AM should read.

The Technology Talk “AM in aviation and aerospace” and “The sky’s (not) the limit” white paper are the main elements in Formnext Industry Insight’s current focus, but there is much more to discover. On the organization’s aviation and aerospace webspecial, you will find additional resources, including a series of presentations from the AERO AM Summit presented by Formnext this past April. For example, Christophe Blanc, Technical Business Development Manager at Materialise, presented a talk on scaling AM in aerospace, and Niccolo Giannelli, Director FDM Global Enablement Stratasys, explored the company’s solutions for aerospace applications.

Of course, [the main event of the year](https://www.voxelmatters.com/event/formnext-2025/) is yet to come and both visitors and exhibitors at Formnext 2025 in Frankfurt can expect the focus on aviation and aerospace to continue. For this year’s expo, over 800 exhibitors and 30,000 visitors are expected to show up at Frankfurt am Main from November 18 to 21, 2025.

“Additive Manufacturing holds major benefits for the aviation and aerospace manufacturing industry,” Formnext says. “From faster prototyping and shorter time to market across improved design flexibility, reduced material waste to lightweight construction and increased sustainability AM plays a growing part in the aerospace industry. All the more reason to shine a spotlight on this dynamic application-driven industry with the diverse formats of the Formnext Industry Insights. Get inspired, stay informed, and be fully prepared when this key topic takes the stage at Formnext this November.”

Overall, Formnext Industry Insights has put together a comprehensive set of events and resources that cover everything from the latest applications of additive technologies in aerospace to technological advancements that are shaping the future of the intersecting segments to the challenges that lie ahead.
