Additive Appearance launches PrismSlicer for multi-material 3D printing
For photorealistic, color-optimized models and parts
Prague-based startup Additive Appearance—a spin-off from Charles University—officially launched PrismSlicer, an advanced full-color slicing and DfAM (Design for Additive Manufacturing) software designed specifically for multi-material, inkjet-based 3D printing. PrismSlicer offers high-fidelity color reproduction, precise volumetric control, and improved material efficiency, making it ideal for industrial design, healthcare, dental work, model making, education, and rapid prototyping applications.
PrismSlicer was created to overcome the limitations of conventional slicing software. It incorporates a state-of-the-art photorealistic rendering engine, intelligent material-aware slicing algorithms, and voxel-level authoring tools. These features empower users to minimize trial-and-error, prevent print failures, and accelerate production workflows.
“Many users find it difficult to predict the outcome of their prints, especially when working with complex gradients and detailed color textures,” explained Tobias Rittig, Ph.D., CTO of Additive Appearance. “PrismSlicer is designed to remove that uncertainty. With accurate previews and interactive controls, users can get the desired results on the first try.”
PrismSlicer addresses long-standing challenges in multi-material 3D printing, particularly for inkjet-based technologies. Unlike traditional slicers that rely on outdated surface-based models inherited from 2D printing, PrismSlicer uses a volumetric slicing approach. This enables native support for 3D gradients, dynamic material interpolation, and adaptive color mixing. As a result, it provides users with greater creative freedom and allows them to fully utilize their hardware’s capabilities.
Among its standout capabilities, PrismSlicer delivers photorealistic previews of prints, including accurate representations of material translucency. The software automatically adjusts color and texture using spectral correction and dither pattern optimization, customized to specific printer profiles. It also supports volumetric design, allowing users to integrate textured objects, 3D gradients, and digital materials. Compatibility extends across leading systems, such as Stratasys PolyJet and Quantica NovoJet, and it can be tailored to custom inkjet setups. PrismSlicer runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms.
“Our early collaboration with Quantica helped validate the core technology,” added Tobias. “PrismSlicer is fully developed and ready to support a broad and diverse user base across multiple industries.”
Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a newcomer to 3D printing, PrismSlicer offers the speed, precision, and usability that modern users require. Its user-friendly interface combines advanced tools and guided workflows that simplify even the most complex tasks. For those relying on external print services, the software’s predictive preview—or “virtual printing”—feature allows for accurate experimentation and iteration without direct access to a printer.
“Our goal is to ensure that users can trust that what they see on screen will match the final printed object,” said Tobias. “This reliability is crucial in high-stakes environments such as dental and surgical modeling, but it’s equally important for artists and designers working in entertainment who require predictable visual outcomes.”
PrismSlicer contributes to more sustainable and cost-effective production by drastically reducing the number of test prints needed to perfect a design. Instead of going through five to ten failed prints to fine-tune a color, users can verify accuracy directly on their screen. This conserves materials and saves valuable machine, operator, and post-processing time. It aligns with a broader industry movement toward eco-friendly and resource-efficient manufacturing.
Additive Appearance is actively building partnerships in sectors including medical and dental prosthetics, commercial printing, industrial prototyping, toys and figurines, and visual effects. The company offers PrismSlicer through a subscription model, ensuring users benefit from quarterly updates and improvements. Future developments on the roadmap will further expand the software’s compatibility and functionality.
