Aconity3D, a German company specializing in metal 3D printing, has released a multi-material welding head for its AconityWIRE directed energy deposition (DED) platform. The component makes the processing of up to three different wire materials within a single build possible, without requiring a system changeover.

The integrated module has been designed to reduce setup complexity for multi-material workflows that have historically required either separate systems, or extensive retooling between material runs. AconityWIRE is the brand’s wire-based metal 3D printing for industrial applications solution.

The welding head supports both new-build and repair applications, and worn or damaged components can be selectively restored using material-specific combinations. This allows operators to deposit function-optimized materials onto existing parts for reinforcement or local material modification.

Available as a production add-on for the AconityWIRE or as a standalone process module for integration into third-party machines, the welding head is already in active use at the Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences (Technische Hochschule Rosenheim).

There, it is being applied to research, process development, and multi-material application testing. The university is using the system to validate processes and translate research outcomes into application-oriented scenarios.

Aconity3D will demonstrate the welding head live at AconityXPERIENCE, its first in-house exhibition, scheduled for May 19, 2026. The event will also feature demonstrations of the company’s latest laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) machine, the AconityX.
