# adidas drops Futurecool 3D printed sneaker

German sportswear giant adidas has been a leading force in the commercialization of 3D printed footwear. Over the past decade, the company has brought to market a number of innovative products, from the first adidas 3D Runner in 2016 with a 3D printed midsole; to the more refined [Futurecraft 4D](https://www.voxelmatters.com/adidas-officially-launches-futurecraft-4d-running-shoes-mass-customization-real/) and [4DFWD](https://www.voxelmatters.com/adidas-unveils-the-new-4dfwd-forward-motion-running-shoe/) models; to [Climacool](https://www.voxelmatters.com/adidas-3d-printed-climacool-sneakers-now-with-laces/), its first fully 3D printed footwear product launched in 2024; to performance [basketball shoes](https://www.voxelmatters.com/adidas-bb-01-additive-basketball-shoes-launch-next-week/) and [soccer cleats](https://www.voxelmatters.com/adidas-3d-printed-soccer-cleats-have-arrived/) in the past year. Now, it is taking this evolution forward with the launch of Futurecool. 

According to adidas, the new Futurecool 3D printed sneaker is based on its Climacool legacy but introduces a new, bolder silhouette. That is to say, like Climacool, the new shoe is 3D printed in a single piece and integrates a unique lattice structure that is optimized for breathability, support, and comfort.

While the sporting brand has not disclosed the specific technology and materials behind the new 3D printed footwear product, we know that its Futurecraft 4D midsole and Climacool sneakers were realized using [Carbon’s Digital Light Synthesis](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/carbon3d/) technology and made from a material of UV curable resin and polyurethane. 

This process enables the seamless construction of the shoe, eliminating the need for traditional sneaker assembly steps as well as adhesive materials. More than that, the unique lattice construction of the shoe has been engineered for 360° breathability and adaptive-fit comfort, with a variable density that provides structured support and flexibility where needed.

Compared to the more conventional Climacool sneaker silhouette, Futurecool introduces a bolder, more futuristic style with “distinctive sculpted proportions”. The shoe also integrates adidas’ signature three stripes along the outer side and on the tongue, along with a contrasting stripe along the top of the sneaker. As far as we know, the shoe is being released in a single colorway, black on white.

adidas has been amongst the most successful at making[ 3D printed footwear](https://www.voxelmatters.com/category/3d-printed-consumer-products/3d-printed-footwear/) more mainstream, with relatively broad launches of its 3D printed wearables and a price point comparable to that of traditional upmarket sneakers. The roll-out of the new Futurecool model will be done in stages. As of today, adidas is releasing 400 individually numbered pairs of the 3D printed shoe, which are being made available through a raffle draw on the CONFIRMED app. For those not able to nab a pair of the shoes from the raffle, the official worldwide launch will be on April 1, 2027. The unisex Futurecool sneaker is retailing for €180 (~$210) and will be available in UK sizes 4-14.
