3DEO, Inc., the metal 3D printing company known for its Intelligent Layering binder jetting process, entered insolvency proceedings, and Insolvency Services Group solicited offers for the company’s intellectual property portfolio as assignee for the benefit of creditors under California law.

Insolvency Services Group engaged Brian Testo Associates, LLC to market the assets and received a stalking horse bid of $3,426,507 covering the IP portfolio along with certain machinery and equipment. Qualified overbids are due August 12, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. PST.

3DEO built a reputation for rapid growth early on, registering triple-digit percent revenue growth in 2020, along with several other successful milestones, before it struggled to convert that early trajectory into sustained scale. The company’s technology drew attention across the metal binder jetting segment, but its marketing and commercial support did not keep pace with its early production and design wins.

The pattern echoes a recurring problem across the additive manufacturing sector, where companies tend to fall into one of two traps: some over-invest in generalist mass-targeted marketing and promise more than their technology can deliver at scale, while others hold strong technology but under-invest in the necessary trade-specific marketing and business development needed to convert early results into a lasting market position, assuming the technology alone will drive commercial growth.

A unique company in production AM

3DEO built its business around Intelligent Layering, a patented process that combines binder jetting with layer-by-layer CNC milling to produce small, geometrically complex metal parts. The company positioned the process as achieving tighter tolerances (±0.002 inches) and a finer surface finish (100 Ra) than conventional binder jetting or laser powder bed fusion.

The assets for sale include patents, trademarks, process know-how, trade secrets, software, and qualified materials data, which cover sintering profiles, shrinkage compensation models, and mechanical property data for four qualified alloys, as well as proprietary slicing and cutting-path software.

Bidding on the future of AM

Qualified overbids must meet several conditions: they must be submitted to the assignee by the deadline, have terms that are substantially similar to the stalking horse offer, have a purchase price at or above the qualified overbid amount, include an earnest money deposit of at least 10% of the proposed price, and provide evidence of the bidder’s ability to close. If qualified overbids are submitted, Brian Testo Associates will conduct a live auction over Zoom on August 14, 2026. Bidders must meet U.S. export controls and sign a non-disclosure agreement before accessing diligence materials.

Separately, 3DEO’s remaining machinery and equipment is being sold lot-by-lot through an online timed auction on BidSpotter.com, running from July 24 to August 18, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
