3D Systems presents new Figure 4 Jewelry system

3D Systems has launched a new Figure 4 production system dedicated specifically to the jewelry market. The machine—called the Figure 4 Jewelry—offers high speed printing as well as high precision and fine feature detail capabilities. It is optimized for particular applications, including jewelry casting patterns, master patterns for molds and prototype/fit models.

3D Systems introduced its scalable Figure 4 technology in 2018, bringing to market a viable solution for low- and medium-volume plastic parts. Now, the company is honing in on one of the Figure 4’s adoption markets: the jewelry sector.

The Figure 4 Jewelry is built for productivity, offering users a print speed of 16 mm per hour at 30 um layer resolution. The projection-based imaging technology is reportedly capable of printing a full platform of rings up to four times faster than competing systems.

The Figure 4 Jewelry is also set apart by two new features: exclusive MicroPoint support structures and 3D Sprint software build styles developed specifically for jewelry applications. The first new feature, MicroPoint, consists of ultra-fine tip support structures that minimize part-to-support contact. In combination with the system’s non-contact membrane technology, MicroPoint facilitates post-processing by enabling easier support removal and smoother surface finishes. This, in turn, allows for minimized polishing and post-processing.

3D Systems’ 3D Sprint software has been updated to include a number of proprietary print build styles for the jewelry market, enabling fine and intricate geometries, as well as thicker structures. This makes it easier to print jewelry with fine mesh features, sharp prongs and other small details.

“With the launch of our Figure 4 jewelry solution, 3D Systems continues to enable new applications for our Figure 4 production solution,” commented Menno Ellis, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Plastics at 3D Systems. “Building upon our industry-leading technology and materials portfolio, we are able to help jewelers create designs with unprecedented speed and accuracy. This is just one more example of how 3D Systems is blending our expertise in materials science, application engineering, 3D printing technology and software to deliver solutions that keep our customers at the forefront of their respective industries and markets.”

The integrated production solution for the jewelry sector is suitable for three main jewelry applications: the production of jewelry casting patterns, master patterns for molds and prototype/fit check models. For casting applications, users can utilize 3D Systems’ Figure 4 JCAST-GRN 10 material, which creates minimal ash and residue after burnout. The material is already available for purchase.

Other materials, designed for master pattern molds and prototyping models will be released by 3D Systems later this year (1H 2020). The material for prototyping/fit check applications will reportedly be high contrast to showcase fine detail for jewelry fittings.

The system is fast, reliable and accurate. Figure 4 Jewelry allows jewelry manufacturing to be two or even three times more productive and cost-effective compared to traditional methods and alternative desktop printers.”
