3D Systems launches DMP Flex 100 and DMP Dental 100 3D printers for entry-level metal AM

Additive manufacturing giant 3D Systems has just released two new entry-level metal 3D printers based on its Direct Metal Printing (DMP) technology: the DMP Flex 100 and and DMP Dental 100 3D printers. Both machines are said to offer high quality and good throughput and are available for order immediately.

“3D Systems is demonstrating its commitment to bringing industrial-grade metal additive manufacturing to a wider customer base with the launch of the DMP Flex 100 and DMP Dental 100 metal 3D printers,” said Kevin McAlea, EVP metals and healthcare, 3D Systems.

“Both solutions feature levels of throughput, print quality, ease of use and material choice that put them in a class by themselves. We believe these 3D printing solutions will further expand the adoption of metal additive manufacturing by designers and engineers, researchers, manufacturers and dental professionals.”

DMP Flex 100

Built for R&D, application development and production purposes, 3D Systems’ new DMP Flex 100 offers a range of improvements over the company’s earlier entry-level metal 3D printer model, the ProX DMP 100. Most significantly, the DMP Flex 100 offers twice the throughput of its predecessor.

Equipped with a compact build volume of 100 x 100 x 80 mm and the capacity to print parts with surface finishes as fine as Ra 5 μm (200 Ra micro inches), the DMP Flex 100 is well suited for manufacturing small, precision metal parts with intricate details. 3D Systems emphasizes that the high surface quality of prints also reduces the amount of post-processing required.

The new entry-level metal 3D printer also integrates a proprietary powder deposition technology which enables it to build down to 20° angles without the need for supports. This feature, of course, also offers the benefit of less post-processing (support removal) and less material usage leading to lower costs and faster production rates.

Finally, an increase in the 3D printer’s processing power has provided the machine with the capacity to support a broader range of metal materials, including various grades of Titanium and other alloys. Presently, 3D Systems is offering two materials for the DMP Flex 100: LaserForm CoCr (B) and LaserForm 17-4PH (B), though more are expected to follow. Both materials have been extensively tested and are accompanied by optimized print databases. The DMP Flex 100 metal 3D printer also comes with 3DXpert, 3D System’s software solution for DfAM.

DMP Dental 100

As suggested by its name, the DMP Dental 100 3D printer is geared towards the dental market—an industry which has been a fast adopter of both polymer and metal 3D printing technologies. 3D Systems’ latest entry-level dental machine was built for producing high-quality dental prostheses at a reliable and productive price to performance ratio.   

As an example, 3D Systems says the DMP Dental 100 is capable of manufacturing up to 90 crown copings in a single print run and in under four hours (with only 25 minutes needed for heat treatment).

In terms of specs, the machine has a build volume of 100 x 100 x 100 mm, surface finishes of up to 5 Ra μm, and a print accuracy of 50 microns. These features allow users to produce highly precise crown copings, bridges, supra-structures and partial frames with near-perfect fit and minimal post-processing, ultimately providing dental labs with competitive turnarounds.

The new DMP Dental 100 also comes with FDA and CE certified Ni-free LaserForm CoCr (C) (ISO 13485, ISO 9001) and an optional external recycling station. To further optimize digital workflows in dental labs, 3D Systems is also offering a high-performance software solution for managing dental prostheses production.

Both the DMP Dental 100 and DMP Flex 100 were built as entry-level machines, meaning that, while they are industrial-grade, they are also accessible and suitable for dental professionals, researchers, designers and others who are looking to integrate metal AM into their workflows for the first time.
