After the Innovation Award ADI Design Index 2014, the Afillia 3D Printed lamp, designed by Alessandro Zambelli for .exnovo, received the prestigious “Premio dei Premi” (Prize of Prizes) Italian Innovation Award 2015.

This award has a high significance both for Afillia – a family of hanging and table lamps manufactured by .exnovo, and for the the acceptance of 3D printing manufacturing methods and materials in the world of high end design.

We have covered Alessandro Zambelli‘s work both on Replicatore.it and 3Dprintingindustry.com. I have had the opportunity to speak with him about combining advanced 3D printed geometrical capabilities with high-end precious materials (such as rare wood in this case). Zambelli relies on .exnovo, a pioneer in the use of professional 3D printing, to create lighting accessories and furnishings – something that has certainly become a symbol for 3D printed design projects.

The Afillia range of six lighting accessories consists of three table lamps and three pendant lights. The base or socket ring is in Swiss pine, a premium wood from the Alto Adige mountains, hand-crafted according to the region’s ancient traditions. The wood fitting locks on to a light diffuser in polyamide (also known as nylon fibre), sintered by professional 3D printing.

Now entering its seventh year, the National Award for Innovation – Premio dei Premi – is an initiative by the Italian government promoted by decree in 2008 and is set up with permission of the President of the Italian Republic at the National Foundation for Innovation COTEC .
The recognition of the Premio dei Premi aims to enhance and support the best innovative and creative capacities of companies, universities, public authorities, organizations or individual designers, in order to foster the growth of innovation culture in the country, or the ability to understand, evaluate and use new technologies with a critical eye.

.exnovo is a brand by HSL, one of the first companies in Italy and Europe to invest seriously in 3D printing at a professional and industrial level. Through the development of innovative processes HSL has become a European reference point for rapid prototyping, small series and the manufacturing quality additive, always with the search for technical perfection and beauty.

From this experience the .exnovo brand was established, with the goal of implementing the philosophy, vision and know-how of HSL to the design of lamps and other design accessories. Today .exnovo is a leading brand in the creation – through professional 3D printing technologies – of decorative lighting collections, limited editions and customized solutions, tailored, developed specifically for individual customers.
