# 3D printed chair by Nagami and ZHA inspired by echoes

If someone were to ask you to envision an echo physically, what would you imagine? An echo can be described as a reflection of sound, so what would that come to look like in a geometry? That’s a question that ZHA Architects (formerly Zaha Hadid Architects) set out to answer with its ECHO chair, a parametrically designed piece brought to life with large-scale 3D printing. 

[Nagami](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/nagami/), a Spain-based company that specializes in the production of furniture and architectural pieces using large-format 3D printing, worked closely with ZHA Architects to bring the unique chair to life using recycled and recyclable materials. Inspired by the echo, the chair is generated from “two continuous surfaces emerging from a shared structural edge.” In more specific terms, Nagami and ZHA explain that the chair’s seat and base can be seen as an echo of its backrest and supporting structure.

“The new 3D printed ECHO Chair collection by ZHA for Nagami explores an echo as a geometric condition rather than an acoustic phenomenon,” Nagami writes. “Instead of repetition, an echo is understood as a transformation—a single geometric logic unfolding into multiple structural, spatial and material expressions."

The 3D printed ECHO chair, which is manufactured on a made-to-order basis by Nagami using recycled PETG, retails for between €669 ($760) and €1,231 ($1,400) depending on the color selected. The chair is constructed in a single continuous piece using Nagami’s large-format extrusion 3D printer; notably the layer lines of the chair, which are vertical when the chair is upright, add to the overall aesthetic, emphasizing the feeling of motion and reverberation.

The ECHO chair is not the first time that ZHA and Nagami have collaborated. Back in 2018, the architecture firm and 3D printing studio created the BOW and RISE chairs, both of which were characterized by a distinct organic structure. Nagami, for its part, has worked on various large-scale 3D printing projects, including a retail installation for jeweller Cartier in collaboration with [artist Patricia Urquiola](https://www.voxelmatters.com/artist-patricia-urquiola-uses-lfam-and-sustainable-materials-in-new-installation/), customized panels for suites at The Unexpected Ibiza Hotel, and more.
