The 3D Pioneers Challenge 2020 has just revealed the 52 participants that are moving ahead into the next stage of the 3D design and printing contest. The finalists have submitted innovative designs across 10 categories and are still in the running to win some of the €35,000 prize money.

Though the 3D Pioneers Challenge has, like the rest of the world of AM events, felt the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, its organizers have adjusted by planning a digital award ceremony later this year. In previous years, the 3D Pioneers Challenge had presented its finalists at Rapid.Tech 3D, and the winners were awarded at a gala event at Messe Erfurt. This year, a digital award ceremony will be broadcast on July 15, 2020 to announce the winners from the pool of 52 finalists. The digital format has actually enabled the contest to include more finalists than usual.

Despite the pandemic, the 3D Pioneers Challenge 2020 has still had a wide range of submissions, with entries from 28 countries from six continents. According to the challenge, 2020 has been its most diverse in terms of international reach.

As mentioned, the 50 finalists have submitted designs in 10 categories. They are: Architecture, Design, Digital, Electronics, FashionTech, Material, MedTech / Covid-19, Mobility and Sustainability. (The challenge organizers decided to open up a COVID-19 subcategory to accommodate the many pertinent submissions it received.) Though we won’t name the full list of finalists (it can be found here), here are some highlights:

These finalists and others are in the running to win one of many book prizes, as well as a total of €35,000 in prize money donated by the Thuringian Ministry of Economics, Science and Digital Society. The best student work will also be awarded with a MakerBot Replicator+ 3D printer, while three “special mentions” will be admitted to the Autodesk Residency Program. The first place winner of the 3D Pioneer Challenge will have the special honor of receiving a 3D printed trophy designed by Ross Lovegrove in collaboration with Hyperganic and Materialise.

The 3D Pioneers Challenge 2020 jury consists of 21 experts from across the additive world. Because of social distancing and travel restrictions, the panel has been judging submissions remotely, using digital communication channels. 2020 judges include HP’s Sonita Lontoh, AM Ventures’ Arno Held, Nervous System’s Jessica Rosenkrantz and Dr. Marco Nock from EOS Innovation Management.
