Celebrate International Women’s Day with the updated list of the Most Influential Women in 3D Printing

On International Women’s Day, we present the updated list of the 25 most influential women in 3D printing. These women are leading the way the AM industry grows and will continue to grow in the near- and medium-term future.
Like many other engineering and manufacturing-centric segments, the 3D printing industry is historically a male-dominated industry. However, unlike traditional manufacturing and engineering, AM seems to be attracting many more women, either as engineers and managers or, even more so, in roles where creativity and the ability to think outside the box are key aspects.
Today you can find some the most influential women in 3D printing in roles that span from fashion to architecture, to journalism, biotechnology, engineering, marketing, and sales. Or even in roles that combine one or more of these areas.
Those women who work in high-visibility roles (in design or fashion or other mass industries with a consumer target) often have a greater influence on the industry’s evolution than those who hold executive and managerial roles. This trend is reflected in 3DPMN’s Most Influential Women in 3D Printing list as well.

1 (7). Anouk Wipprecht, Designer and Artist

Who is she? Wipprecht is an artist, designer, curator and lecturer in electronic couture. Many of her creations make intensive use of 3D printing, often in collaboration with 3D printing service Materialise.

She is certainly one of the most active promoters of 3D printing. She has recently worked tech-singer Viktoria Modesta, as well as Swarovski – al while holding a  residency at TED and continuing here collaboration with Autodesk. In the past, she has worked with Black Eyed Peas, SuperBowl, Eurovision, Audi, Volkswagen and more. Recently she has been invited to talk about her vision for technology in fashion on CNN. Famous 3D printed incarnations include the Smoke Dress and Spider Dress. She is also curator of the TECHNOSENSUAL ‘Where Fashion meets Technology’ exhibition.

2 (5). Jennifer A. Lewis, Professor at Lewis Lab, Harvard and Founder of  Voxel8

Who is she? The Lewis Lab at Harvard Wyss Institute is behind many innovations in the field of bioprinting and materials science. It generally focuses on the directed and self-assembly of soft functional materials, which are extruded through pneumatic extrusion systems.

Apart from breakthrough research on multi-material bioprinting of capillary networks, Prof Lewis also co-founded Voxel8, which uses a pneumatic extrusion 3D printing technology to build functional electronic devices.

3 (1). Neri Oxman, Professor at Mediated Matter Lab, MIT

Who is she? MIT professor, Ph.D., designer, architect, artist, Neri Oxman has received more awards and recognition for her creative talent than we can list here.

Many of her artistic experiments push the boundaries of 3D printing, often in collaboration and with the support of industry leaders Stratasys, have been among the most talked about and influential of the past five years. These include highly intricate multi-color, multi-material and multi-density objects made with Stratasys’ Connex3 polyjet technology and extrusion 3D printing with glass.

4 (2). Limor “LadyAda” Fried, Founder of Adafruit

Who is she? One of the women that best represents a new generation of makers and designers, she was the first female engineer on the cover of WIRED magazine and has received awards for her entrepreneurial achievements.

Limor Fried founded Adafruit as a place for learning electronics and making the best-designed products for makers. Adafruit has since grown into the leading online retailer for maker projects, with over 50 employees in the heart of NYC with a 15,000+ sq ft. factory. It has also expanded its offerings to include tools, equipment, and electronics.

5 (6). Iris Van Herpen, Fashion Designer and Artist

Who is she? Pushing the boundaries of 3D printing in high fashion? That would be Iris Van Herpen. Many of her collections — which have been exhibited at Amsterdam, London and Paris Fashion Week since 2010 — focus on the implementation of generative design and industrial 3D printing technologies.

Recent items such as Quaquaversal, Hacking Infinity, Biopiracy, Wilderness Embodied and Voltage and Hybrid Holism integrate several 3D technologies. She has also collaborated with Neri Oxman. She continues to innovate in the fashion industry through the use of technologies such as 3D printing.

6. Laurence Vigeant-Langlois, Global Marketing Executive at GE Additive

Who is she? GE Additive is part of GE – the world’s Digital Industrial Company. Ever since the loud entrance into the AM market, through the acquisition of both Concept Laser and Arcam, GE has become one of the most important players in the global metal AM industry.

Dr. Laurence Vigeant-Langlois is part of a cross-functional team that launched the new GE Additive business in 2016. In her global marketing leadership role, she is responsible for positioning GE Additive to become the industrialization partner of choice with offerings including additive manufacturing materials, machines, and engineering consulting, serving customers in aerospace, medical, automotive, energy and other industry verticals.

7. Rita Bermudez, WW 3D Printing, Marketing and Sales Applications at HP

Who is she? HP has rapidly become the most relevant player in polymer-based 3D printing. Launched in 2016, the compay’s MJF technology is growing and evolving everyday. It is changing the way production is made. Rit Bermudez has been with  HP since 1994 as an Information and Research student with 20 years experience in research, communication, innovation and creativity within hi-tech business. In her role at HP 3D printing she is providing a key contribution to the massive disruption that HP is bringing to digital manufacturing.

8. Sarah Webster, Global Marketing Director at EnvisionTEC

Who is she? EnvisionTEC is a Top Three global manufacturer of 3D printers and materials serving the medical, professional and industrial sectors. The company offers leading 3D printing technology in the jewelry, dental and in ear markets. Ever since Sarah joined the marketing department, EnvisionTEC has stepped up in terms of communication, providing a much more effective integrated communications network to deliver these messages to the industry as a whole.

Her responsibilities are global covering all marketing and communications activities with a focused and driven team. Sarah is responsible for the EnvisionTEC brand, trade shows, advertising, sponsorships, SEO/SEM, product and content marketing, all media activities (social, B2B and mainstream), as well as dealer, customer and CEO communications.

9. Valerie Buckingham, VP of Marketing at Carbon

Who is she? Carbon is one of the hottest new companies in 3D printing. Its technology is driving the transition from protyping to production and Valerie is in charge of delivering this message to the world, even beyond AM, as was the case for the high profile Adidas deal. She leads a team of marketers and creators, enabling Carbon’s customers to manufacture the businesses and products of the future.

10. Arita Mattsoff, VP of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at Stratasys

Who is she? After contributing to making Stratasys, the biggest company in the world of 3D printing, as VP of marketing, Arita recently moved up to her new role in leading Stratasys’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. Since 2010 she has been running marketing operations at Objet (the company that merged with Stratasys) and led the company’s marketing activities all the way through the recent marketing reorganization and move to the new state-of-the-art headquarters in Rehovot.

Today, Arita leads the company’s CSR activities, dedicated to harnessing Stratasys unique technological advantages to help society. From educational empowerment programs, designed to introduce children from diverse backgrounds to new, advanced and innovative ways of thinking, to healthcare programs dedicated to advancing pre-surgical planning and prosthetics for children.

11. Danit Peleg, Fashion Designer and Lecturer

Who is she? Danit is a Fashion Designer known for her 3D Printed Fashion work. Danit’s 3D printed graduate collection made waves in the fashion and tech worlds. In the summer of 2017, Danit launched a customization and personalization platform on her website, enabling customers to personalize and order the world’s first 3D printed garment available to purchase online.

In the future, as the technology improves, Danit envisions a world where anyone will be able to buy files and print clothes at home or at a designated store.

12. Claudia Jordan, Press Officer at EOS

Who is she? EOS is the only company that currently holds leadership roles in both polymer and metal 3D printing hardware manufacturing. With the company since 2008 as global press offices, Claudia Jordan has been responsible for the company’s communication activites and has a unique knowledge of the AM industry, its operators and its dynamics

13. Sarah Goerke, Editor in Chief at 3Dprint.com

Who is she? Reporting tirelessly on 3D printing for the largest 3D printing news website in the world, Sarah is perhaps the most visible expert on the current 3D printing market scenario in the world. Her reporting is always matter-of-fact and fair, driven by a passion and curiosity for the industry and all of its operators.

14. Katrien Vandenplas, Global Marketing Director e-Commerce at Materialise

Katrien has been with Materialise since 2012 so she has overseen much of the company’s recent, explosive growth. Materialise is now a very large company with several reference marketing figures worldwide however her role continues to offer a solid base and a global reference for marketing.

15. Lynda McKinney, Global Head of Communications at Desktop Metal

As Head of Communications for one of 3D printing’s fastest growing company’s Lynbnda McKinney’s influence on the industry is also going to be increasingly relevant. Desktop Metal is reinventing the way design and manufacturing teams produce metal parts – from prototyping through mass production. The team is built around the disciplines of materials science, hardware and software engineering, and design and the company raised $212 million in equity funding with investment from technology leaders including Google, BMW, Lowe’s, GE, and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. In 2017, Desktop Metal was selected as one of the world’s 30 most promising Technology Pioneers by World Economic Forum, and was recently named to MIT Technology Review’s list of 50 Smartest Companies.

16. Rachel Park, Journalist

Who is she? Rachel Park is perhaps the best-known journalist covering the 3D printing industry and has been on this particular beat for nearly two decades. She’s a passionate advocate for the benefits and potential of additive manufacturing, but also very outspoken about the hyperbole and misinformation that sometimes clouds the industry.

Park was an editor at Rapid News Publications until 2008, then founder and Editor in Chief at 3Dprintingindustry.com, before moving to launch Disruptive Magazine in collaboration with 3D Printshow. Rachel also actively collaborates with 3D Printing Media Network.

17. Marinella Levi, +Lab, Professor at Politecnico di Milano

Who is she? Professor Levi has been a Full Professor at Milan’s Politecnico University, Chemical and Materials Engineering Department since 2007.

In 2013 she founded the +Lab, which employs engineers, designers, researchers and makers to forge a multidisciplinary approach to 3D printing. It’s a place where teaching, research and design are blended together to develop innovations in materials and technology. Pro Levi is also actively collaborating with the green divisions of Italian energy giant ENI and is conducting some of the most advanced research in the worl on 3D printing of continuous fiber composite materials through Kuka robotic arms.

18. Galit Beck, Global Marketing and PR Manager at Nano Dimension

Nano Dimension is the company spearheading the future of 3D printed electronics. Galit is the person in charge of getting this message through. This is not an easy job as the company is still very much in a startup phase and has the goal to target a challenging global market. Galit works closely with the company’s executive team and external PR agencies to launch the company and its products.

19. Virginia San Fratello, Co-founder Emerging Objects

Who is she? Together with partner Ronald Rael, Virginia San Fratello is leading materials research in 3D printing, especially with an eye toward architectural and housing applications.

They founded the Rael-San Fratello architect studio, as well as Emerging Objects, a studio that focuses on experimenting with new materials for binder jetting technologies (in collaboration with 3D Systems). She was the recipient of Metropolis Magazine’s Next Generation Design Award for her Hydro Wall concept.

20. Jenny Chen, Founder and CEO at 3DHEALS

Who is she? Jenny is trained as a neuroradiologist, founder/CEO of 3DHEALS, a company focusing on curating healthcare 3D printing ecosystem. Her main interests include medical education, 3D printing in the healthcare sector, and artificial intelligence. She is also a current adjunct clinical faculty in the radiology department at Stanford Healthcare.

21. Sara Bonomi, EMEA Channel Marketing Lead at Formlabs

Who is she? Sara has been in charge of delivering the Formlabs’ message and the uniquye capabilities of its low-cost stereolithography technology. If Formlabs is now the company that has sold the most SLA 3D printers in history, some of the merits go, especially for the strong European results, go to her.

22. Ilaria Guicciardini, Global Head of Marketing at Roboze

Who is she? If Roboze is today the fastest growing Italian 3D printer manufacturer and its founder, Alessio Lorusso, is in Forbes’ Top Under 30 Entrepreneur’s list, Ilaria highly effective and non-stop marketing work has a lot to do with it. Roboze is a key company in 3D printing since it has developed and optimized a technology for 3D printing advanced polymers such as PEEK, so her influence is destined to grow in the near future.

23 Ariel Kramer, Chief Communications Officer at CELLINK

Who is she? CELLINK is the first company in the world to commercialize a universal bioink for 3D Bioprinting.  The company focuses on the development and commercialization of bioprinting technologies that allow researchers to 3D print human organs and tissues for the development of pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, and in the future, for clinical applications.  As head of communications, marketing and branding, Ariel helped CELLINK transition from a private to public company during their IPO, through highly effective communication and marketing campaigns.

24. Julielynn Wong, MD, MPH, Founder of 3D4MD, lecturer

Who is she? Dr. Wong is Harvard-educated public health physician, innovator, educator lecturer and pioneer in 3D printing medical devices in austere environments.

She carried out several experiments involving 3D printing and space exploration with NASA, and launched the first 3D printing learning activity for students and teachers at Canada’s only Challenger Learning Centre. She is also a frequent contributor to various media outlets including ABC News, Forbes, and the Huffington Post.

25. Gina Häußge, Founder of Octoprint

Who is she? With the open source Octoprint software, Häußge developed a “snappy web interface for your 3D printer”. Using a Raspberry Pi, you can add a 3D printer to a wireless network, lets you control and monitor your prints, and even provides webcam features — and it’s totally free. Incredibly, she developed the Octoprint in 2012 over a 2 week Christmas vacation… and it’s taken over her life ever since.

    Puting her on the list- any list, is the biggest joke ever!

Hi Avi, Arita was doing global marketing and other business development activities at Stratasys/Objet for years – when most of the people today in the industry did not even know what 3D printing was. She was behind many activities that go AM a lot of visibility in the media and generalist media. In the past she was even higher up on the list
